Yoga for the Sacral Plexus

Oh hey there,

It’s funny how life can get at you. It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything. However, I have been working on my Sacral Plexus Chakra. Lately, it is harder to stay focused on this journey to balance between my two jobs, and life itself. Regardless, I have been trying to stay on track. The element related to the second chakra is water, so you know I have been taking tons of baths. 😉

To refresh, “The second chakra is the foundation of the emotional body, it influences our ability to feel emotions, sensations and atmospheres, and controls our ability to let go of our emotions. The second chakra influences our sexuality and sensuality, physical force, sexual and ardent love, open-mindedness, our ability to yield and cooperating amicably with other people. This chakra physically influences the lower abdomen, spleen, liver, bladder, kidneys, sexual organs, reproduction and fertility. When the sacral plexus chakra is performing correctly, the person will feel healthy, open, friendly, imaginative and creative which helps us to focus on our objectives. The person will have concerns for others as it promotes tolerance and patience which in turn helps us to relate with others in a positive manner. When this chakra is balanced it encourages intuition, a good frame of mind, energy and success. It helps you to learn from our experiences whether they be successes or failures providing us with the focus we need for our ambitions. If this chakra is not working properly it cause negative influences in the physical, this is seen in the form of emotional problems or sexual guilt, and excesses in food, sex and drugs. If this chakra is not working properly it creates negative influences in the physical this is seen in the form of bladder infections, impotence or frigidity and problems with the reproductive organs and fertility. If this chakra has too much energy moving through it, we may become self-centred and too ambitious, jealous, distrusting and cold. If too little energy is flowing then we may become shy, hyper-sensitive, untrusting, confused, uncertain, with a growing feeling of aimlessness to our life.” (Source)

I wanted to share some yoga poses that might help the journey to opening up the Sacral Plexus. Disclaimer: I am not a yoga instructor, nor am I perfect at yoga. I do practice regularly, and just want to share some poses that I have used to try to get my Sacral Plexus Chakra spinning.

IMG_6151Bound Angle Pose:

I usually start out every session I do with this pose. It eases me into my practice, and really opens up the hips.

Warrior II:

This pose an establish a great connection with the earth, and really opens up your hips. This can also be followed by Warrior I and Reverse Warior. “As you stand here in the Warrior stance, soften the organ of your skin inward and let that remind you of your innate receptive self. Neither aggressive nor passive, you are a creative, strong, and beautiful being. Spend 5 breaths here and imagine those breaths as water, running rivers of light through your entire physical, emotional, and mental self.” (Source)

IMG_6161Pigeon Pose:

In this photo I am looking up, but eventually you can fall forward, coming very close to the earth. “As you begin to soften down, consciously release your belly. Let go of any tension in the abdomen—let it all hang out. As you release deeply, let your eyes and jaw relax completely. ” (Source)

Cow Face Pose:

This one really gives me a full body stretch. It makes me feel grounded, and gives a great stretch in the hips, legs, arms and lower back.

IMG_6166Supine Bound Angle Pose:

I call this one, “Looks Like I’m Giving Birth Pose,” but it feels like heaven on the hips.

Low Side Lunge:

You can also use any variation of a lunge for this one. While in this pose, really try to let go of the tension in your abdomen and pelvic bones.

Have any poses that work for you? I would love to hear from you!

All for now,
